An emblematic environment that has evolved over time
Formed by the invasion of sea sands in the 6th century, Lac d’Aureilhan extends over four communes: Mimizan, Aureilhan, Saint Paul en Born and Sainte-Eulalie en Born. It measures 340 ha and stretches over 3.5 km. This is one of the lakes in the northern Landes region. These are interconnected by currents.
Being the lowest and most southerly, the Lac d’Aureilhan-Mimizan receives all the water from the lakes of Cazaux – Sanguinet, Parentis – Biscarrosse. This body of water then flows into the ocean 7 km to the west via an inlet. The latter is known as the Courant de Mimizan. The site is also an excellent refuge for many migratory birds.
