Contis lighthouse: a Landes treasure between forest, beaches and ocean

A unique lighthouse in the Landes
Built in 1863, the Contis lighthouse is the only lighthouse on the Landes coast. Its 38-meter-high, black-striped white tower can be seen from afar and is instantly recognizable. Its original purpose was to ensure safe navigation on this stretch of coastline, which was reputed to be dangerous. Restored after damage during the Second World War, it is now a listed historic monument.
This lighthouse offers a spectacular view of the Landes forest, the surrounding beaches and the immensity of theocean. It is also a symbol of the seaside resort of Contis-les-Bains, part of the commune of Saint-Julien-en-Born.
