A Unique Lighthouse in the Landes
Built in 1863, the Contis lighthouse is the only lighthouse on the Landes coastline. Its white tower with black stripes, standing 38 metres tall, can be seen from afar and is instantly recognisable. It was originally built to make navigation safer along this notoriously dangerous stretch of coast. Restored after damage sustained in the Second World War, it is now a listed historic monument.
This lighthouse offers a spectacular view over the Landes forest, the surrounding beaches and the vast ocean. It is also a symbol of the seaside resort of Contis-les-Bains, part of the town of Saint-Julien-en-Born.
