By Guillaume Gruat, Gérant du camping 4 minute read Published on Updated on

Just 27 kilometres from our 4-star campsite in the Landes, the Mimizan Priory Museum takes you deep into the Middle Ages. Once a place of prayer, now a museum, it reveals a rare and moving heritage blending Romanesque art, religious history and local memory. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this atmospheric spot offers the perfect cultural getaway, combining nature, spirituality and discovery.

A must-see visit for young and old history lovers alike.

The Priory of Mimizan: Medieval Origins

Founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks from the abbey of Saint-Sever, the priory of Mimizan stands as a precious witness to the religious past of the Landes. At the time, it served as a stopover on the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), welcoming pilgrims, clergy and travellers in search of spirituality.

Nestled between forest, ocean and marshland, it played an active role in the region’s development, both spiritually and economically. The monks lived by the Rule of St Benedict: prayer, work and silence shaped their daily life within an austere yet structured setting.

Today, although much of the conventual buildings has disappeared, the essential remains: the porch-belltower of the former church, beautifully preserved, still watches over the centuries gone by.

The Porch-Belltower: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The priory’s major remaining landmark, the porch-belltower dates back to the 12th century. It is one of the rare examples of Romanesque art still visible in the Landes. It stands out for its finely preserved biblical carvings.

In 1998, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, underlining its spiritual and architectural significance. This silent monument speaks to visitors: it brings together faith, history and beauty in a single glance.

The Museum: Between Sacred Art and Monastic Life

Housed in the former sacristy, the Priory Museum of Mimizan reveals the monks’ daily life and medieval religious art. Here you will find:

  • carved capitals,
  • liturgical objects,
  • manuscripts
  • architectural fragments

The modern museography highlights every piece, with interactive displays and immersive staging. Everything is designed to place the works back in their spiritual and historical context.

A short but rich visit that brings eight centuries of monastic history to life.

Events and Exhibitions: A Living Place

The Priory Museum of Mimizan does more than preserve the past: it keeps it alive. Indeed, every year, temporary exhibitions highlight themes linked to sacred art, local history or Romanesque heritage.

Concerts, lectures and night visits also punctuate the summer season. These cultural events attract curious and passionate visitors, creating a strong bond between the museum and its local area.

An intimate yet lively place, where history is shared through a variety of formats.
